One of my favorite photographers recently emailed the following note, and I am super happy to say that he was just back on Sable Island visiting it's stunning four legged inhabitants. Roberto and crew write below:

"Dear Friends and Supporters of Dutesco Art,

We just wanted to take a moment to welcome you back from summer and all of your various holidays. We hope you have been well and have enjoyed time with your family and friends.

We have had a lot of developments here at the gallery. The most exciting news of all is that Roberto is currently on Sable Island! He is spending two weeks there taking photographs and filming video footage for the gallery and the Mobile Project. We look forward to sharing these new images with you upon Roberto’s return next week.

Also, we have completely re-hung the entire show. We are attaching a couple pictures to this note so you can take a look. Of course if you are able, please stop by the gallery and see it in person. We think it has never looked better.

Plastic is Forever @ Barney's NY

I posted a while back about my friend Barbara de Vries, who started creating amazing jewelry out of beach plastic. Quite a bit has happened since then and I want to share some of her progress with you. Barbara started experimenting with the plastic as an embellishment on clothing and scarves, and last year won a green design contest at Barneys for one of her beautiful tanks. The pieces are fantastic and have led to a collaboration with Loomstate (Rogan's Eco-Chic colleciton) to create a colorful collection of super fun and beach sexy tees to be sold at Barney's next Spring. I love them, and can't wait to get one...but which color??? I really love the blue, it's like the water just off her beach. Back in February, CDB posted about all the wood detailing she was seeing at ISPO trade fair and it doesn't seem to be letting up. I was recently at the Grand Hyatt in Taipei and they have this enormous wooden ball, consisting of cross-sections of trees, in their lobby.

Trend Union's, Fall Winter 11/12, trend presentation uses birds as the inspiration for the season.
They have an inspiring take on the texture's and color's of birds and translate them into beautiful textiles and silhouettes that have a hint of whimsy or fancy.

Coincidentally, I just bought Andrew Zuckerman's newest book, entitled 'Bird', where he showcases more than 200 photographs of nearly 75 different species of birds. What feels very modern about his photographs is the juxtaposition of the birds against a stark white background in order to showcase the personalities and extraordinary details of his subjects. The book is available on Amazon.

I'm not usually a type of person who enjoys wicker. For me, it conjures up thoughts of bad Easter baskets and the imprints left on your thighs after sitting it your grandmother's lawn chairs. But Lise Bech's baskets have me reconsidering my previous opinion. She lives and works in the Southern Uplands of Scotland, where she grows a wide range of willows that she uses to create these very modern baskets.

At ISPO (Europe's largest sport & outdoor tradeshow), this week, I came across a lot wood detailing - both real and synthetic. I have to say that the out come in even the most common items is an amazing beautifully luxurious feel. I am especially fond of the dumb bells by Hock. The Germany based brand looks at everything as an expression of beauty. Their products include leather sand bag weights that are hand sewn with heavy whip stitching. I also like how wood texture is being combined with really artifical brights as in the Salomon FreeSkis. However, the execution and old world charm of the full wood inlay ski by Volkl is undeniable.

The Sundance Channel held a premiere party for a fantastic sounding new show featuring Keith Johnson, (show above with UK textile artist, Becky Oldfield) buyer-at-large for specialty retailer Anthropologie. The invite-only event was held at the Rockefeller Center Anthropologie Store this last Tuesday.

The show, which premieres Wednesday, October 7th, follows Mr. Johnson as he seeks out the best each country has to offer. Having been to many of his stops myself, I have to admit that he totally has my dream job - the St. Ouen Flea Market in Paris, the Kapalicarsi Grand Bazaar in Istanbul and Piet Botha's Craft Shop in Cape Town! In this ever shrinking world I have long had an interest in the preservation of cultures thru art and design. I think this might be the start of new awareness - however, the words "inspiration for in-house design" can be a red flag esp. when it comes to a mass merchant like Anthro.

Eitherway, I can't wait to see how it all translates in to the stores.

As I signed up for my local beach clean up this past week it reminded me of this amazing jewelry line. Why you ask...well there is an awesome story here. Last fall, I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at these gems when they were just taking shape in the hands of Designer Barbara de Vries. It is completely unimaginable that she creates this stunning jewelry from plastic that she finds along the beaches of the Bahamas.

Each piece of jewelry is one of a kind as each fragment of plastic is unique after being shaped and molded over years, even decades in the ocean. The pieces mimic nature with their stone, coral or salt patina. Totally gorgeous!!

A little about Barbara:

Barbara de Vries has been a critically acclaimed designer for thirty years.

She grew up in Amsterdam and became a fashion model in Paris and London, working for Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Yves Saint Laurent, before studying fashion design at the Royal College of Art in London.

In the eighties she had her own collection in London selling worldwide to stores like Harvey Nichols, Seibu, and Neiman Marcus and her clothes appeared in publications like Vogue, The Times, Harpers Bazaar and numerous Fashion-TV shows.

After moving to New York she became Director of Design at Calvin Klein where she launched the CK Collection.

Recently Barbara started to collect beach plastic after attempting to clean the plastic litter off her favorite beach in the Bahamas.

After so many years in the ocean, she says, the shapes and colors are often extraordinary and inspire me into giving them a second life as a pair of earrings, a bracelet or a necklace. Each piece evolves from it’s original shape and I am really just the recycler.

Vanilla, Chocolate, Sandalwood, and Musk - this is apparently what Taye Diggs smells like according to People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive issue on news stands NOW! He says as part of his daily regimen he layers on the essential oils - yum! In 1966, as a token of gratitude for American aid during World War II, the Republic of Austria donated 11 iconic Swarovski chandeliers to the world famous Metropolitan Opera House. In July, Swarovski removed the iconic chandeliers, shipped them back to Austria and refurbished each and every crystal. This process included using the latest technology to replace over 50,000 custom-made crystals.
They have now been re-installed and the chandeliers will be unveiled at the The Metropolitan Opera House's Opening Night Gala, in celebration of their 125th anniversary, tonight, September 22nd.

I was recently turned on to this ebay type sight by my girl Mimi. It is amazing! You probably already know about it...but if you don't I almost hate to give it away!!! But lucky you...here it is. You don't bid on things, but it is mostly private artists and craftsmen that list their wares in similar, but much cooler way, as the big auction site.
The merchandise is handmade, beautiful, and surprisingly inexpensive! You can search by spinning a globe for goods world wide, or by catagorie, or artist profile.
Above are examples are a bird and berries giclee print on canvas from modernarteveryday, and copper bird earrings by Mimosa in New Zealand. Also, check out KiraFerrer, a jeweler working in Maui.

"Love"is one of the gorgeous photographs I came across at the exhibit, "The Wild Horses of Sable Island" photographs by Roberto Dutesco, in early June at 13 Crosby Street in lower Manhattan. I believe it's been there for a while now, but it's been haunting and inspiring me since. I truly love the imagery and even more so the romanticism of the sea that drifts into my mind whenever recall my 3 visits which I am reminded of by the postcards and poster size flier I picked up there.
I had never heard of Sable Island before, but apparently a herd of nearly 450 of these beautiful wind worn horses have been making a home there. Their lineage is of survivors of any number of the over 275 shipwrecks recorded since 1583. Horses being transported from Europe, Africa, or the local "Acadian" wild horse to southern parts of the new world.
The herd bands together in families of 40-50, comprised of a dominate male, a couple of females and their youngsters, with males banished to form small "bachelor" herds.
I am saving up and plan to make my first serious photography investment on one of these beauties, or maybe one of the surfboards printed a collage of the images. "Love" is really how I feel about them...but then again I am a "horse-person".

BMW and BMW Group DesignworksUSA threw out the auto building rulebook when they came up with the BMW GINA Light Visionary Model (their new concept car revealed recently in the BMW museum in Munich). According to Autoblog, "The outer skin of the auto is made entirely out of textile fabric that's pulled taut around a frame of metal and carbon fiber wires. The skeleton of the car is controlled by electro-hydraulic devices and can actually move and change shape beneath the fabric skin. For instance, the headlights of the concept can be exposed or hidden by the car's skin just like blinking eyes, and the hood opens from the center as the fabric parts to expose the engine. This idea extends to the interior, where BMW designers have made visible only those instruments that are required at a certain time....."

One of the new applications that you can get on your iphone or ipod touch is Pandora, which is a free, online, streaming radio experience. It allows you to create your own music stations simply from a band or song you love. Just drop the name of one of your favorite songs or artists into Pandora and it will scan its entire library of almost a century's worth of popular, new, old and obscure songs to find songs with interesting musical similarities. These songs will make up your radio "station". You can create as many "stations" as you want and can even refine them so they truly represent your individual love for music.

I received an email from Kami Gallaher, at Spa Cushion, telling me about her company's newly designed chaise lounge cushion that allows you to comfortably lay in the sun or get a massage while laying on your stomach. The design has one opening for your head, which allows for breathing and ergonomic neck placement and two openings for your knees, to allow relief from pressing into the chaise. The cushion also has a flip over pillow for when you want to lie on your back. According to their website they will soon have a floating version, perfect for your pool....so go ahead and get lazy in comfort.....

UN Studio, a Netherlands based firm, has been selected to design a UAE museum in Dubai that will house the region's local art. An 84-year-old farmer had the idea of growing square shaped watermelons to help solve the problem of "lack of space" when placing the original round variety in Japanese refrigerators. "A fat, round watermelon can take up a lot of room in a refrigerator, and the usually round fruit often sits awkwardly on refrigerator shelves."
30 years later, Japanese farmers are still inserting the melons into square, tempered glass cases while the fruit is growing on the vine and are selling this square variety in Japan and now the UK.....will the US have them next?

It was hot this weekend at the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn but I know I wasn't hallucinating when among the artists selling their wares, there were also people holding up signs and giving out "free advice", "free sunblock", "free poems" and "free compliments".....and in case you were thirsty, Fizzy Lizzy was giving out free samples of their all-natural juice spritzers. Feeling peckish? How about buying a cupcake to support Barrack.
Among the 200 + vendors, the highlights for me were the handcrafted jewelry from Nervous System and Freshie and Zero.

Well, it has been a month and I am back from my trip. Quite a few events took place during my absence....of them, I would like to mention the death of Yves Saint Laurent who exploded onto the fashion scene as Christian Dior's successor in 1958 and retired in 2002. During his career, he was recognized as changing the way modern women dress. His first collection was know as the Trapeze collection and is appropriately influential to women today.

Also, the annual Council of Fashion Designers America Awards was held at the New York Public Library. Fran Lebowitz (left) was the emcee and Diane Van Furstenberg (right) as the CFTDA president, opened the ceremony with a tribute to YSL.

Worth mentioning are the award winners: Francisco Costa (women's design), Tom Ford (men's design), and Tory Burch (accessories).
Swarovski also presented awards to younger designers: Rodarte label designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy for womenswear, Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders for menswear and Phillip Crangi for accessories.
Of all the soundbites from the evening, my favorite has to be the following quote from Fran Lebowitz, "Despite whatever reputation I have, wholly undeserved to the contrary, I would never insult someone right to their face," she said. "I believe in talking behind peoples' backs. That way, they hear it more than once."

The Costume Institute's gala had a Superheroes theme, a nod to the Superhereos: Fashion and Fantasy exhibit at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Guests were encouraged to push the envelope and embrace the theme through their attire. Sadly, most opted for glamour served straight up but here are some shots of those who were truly inspired.

Summer truly is around the bend! What's the biggest clue this week, you ask....it's the opening of the Pooldeck, at the Empire Hotel in NYC, on Thursday. Built as an exclusive 150-capacity Vegas-style pool, the rooftop is split into two levels: upper level for sunning and swimming, lower level for cocktails and cabanas (cabanas are stocked with flat screen, wireless internet and a day bed). Both levels, however, are for guests only so if you want to hang here, plan on getting a room and making a day and night of it.

I found an article in todays Fashion & Style section of The New York Times to be quite witty. David Colman writes about the old rules of pattern-on-pattern dressing as being a thing of the past, as "outdated as a 35-mm camera". The fear of clashing has been thrown into the garbage bin and is now keeping "not combing your hair and not letting your underwear show" company. In the article, Paul Smith talks about the Duke of Windsor and Fred Astaire being style gods in the 1930's due to their daring mix of patterns but notes that to truly carry off braver mixes of color and pattern today, it is about personal confidence and taste.

For the Love of Vodka

Couldn't help but notice a few buzzes around vodka recently and thought I'd share two that truly appealed to my sensibilities. The first is the new book by Chelsea Handler, 'Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea' which contains hysterical stories from the author's youth and adulthood. Seriously, check it out. The other is LoveJoy Vodka from Integrity Spirits in Portland, Oregon. I really dig the packaging. For some reason it reminds me of old perfume bottles on my grandmother's dresser. Anyway, the name comes from a well traveled street in Portland and the Vodka is made in small batches that can be purchased with any of four different labels. They also have a Hazelnut vodka that has been passed through fresh-roasted Oregon hazelnuts. So the hunt is on for me to try and find it locally....for a very scientifically-based taste test of course.

Surprisingly, Barneys has persuaded Target to launch the collection first in its Manhattan and Beverly Hills flagships beginning on May 8th and May 15th, respectively. The Metropolitan Museum of Art will have a new exhibition starting May 7th, called Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy. According to the pamphlet I received in the mail, "The exhibition will explore the symbolic and metaphorical associations between fashion and the superhero. Featuring movies, costumes, avant-garde haute couture, and high performance sportswear, it will reveal how the superhero serves as the ultimate metaphor for fashion and its ability to empower and transform the human body. Objects will be organized thematically around particular superheroes, whose movie costumes and superpowers will be catalysts for the discussion of key concepts of superheroism and their expression to fashion."

Grand Theft Auto goes Glam

Grand Theft Auto IV, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, is due in stores April 29th. Founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games, Sam Houser stated, "We've pushed ourselves very hard to make something incredible and hope the game sets a new benchmark for interactive entertainment."

It wasn't long ago that I posted about the John Varvatos store in the Hamptons and now I'm compelled to mention his newest store that opened in the former CBGB space on the Bowery in Manhattan. Keeping a lot of the grit from the former tenants, the store still has walls covered with layers of graffiti and stickers, the original bar remains and there is a retractable stage for performances. In addition to the complete JV line represented, there is stereo equipment and records for sale from John's personal collection.

"Color Chart: Reinventing color, 1950 to Today" is a new exhibit at MoMA. Featuring work by 40 artists, Color Chart celebrates the excitement of color as a mass-produced and standardized product. Many of the show's artists looked at the automobile industry's "commercial palette" as their inspiration. The show inevitably makes the point of questioning whether our experience of color is increasingly dictated by corporations and consultancies like Pantone and the Color Marketing Group.

Reine designer Mirit Wenstock was having dinner with a friend and they conversed over the idea that future history books would be filled with writing about the inventors of Google etc. instead of the artists of our time. That night, as Mirit was browsing through Flickr (the photo sharing site) she came up wit the idea of sending her new line of garments to portrait photographers so that they could take portraits of her collection in each of their individual styles. Artists from Bosnia to Israel jumped on board and Reine's Spring Summer 08 catalogue was formed.

Here on Design Find, we find ourselves inspired by many facets of the design industry and we are always interested when one creative world crosses over into another.

This week I received an email from Jane Bevin about INLuxuryDesign, a relatively new, L.A. based company that she owns with friend Robert Ford. InLuxuryDesign has a "Post-Punk Hollywood Regency" style that can been seen in their fabric and wallpaper patterns. As a former burlesque dancer turned master printer and textile designer, you'd expect nothing less.

So Cashmere Mafia is rumored to be cancelled, Lipstick Jungle is hanging on for at least a few more episodes and Quarterlife is back on the air.
Quarterlife began as an ABC pilot. It was dropped and then run by producers online (MySpaceTV). Now it has been picked up and will air on NBC.
The show is about a 20-something magazine editor who seeks freedom by documenting her life online. To promote the new NBC show, a Quarterlife social networking site has launched (similiar to Facebook and MySpace) and is designed to appeal to twenty-something, misunderstood, creative types.

A collection of footage taken from NASA's nine missions (from 1968 - 1972) to the moon has been compiled into a documentary named 'For All Mankind'. It debuts tonight at the IFC Center in New York and with NASA not planning another manned moon landing until at least 2020, this may be a good opportunity for you to relive the space race.

Luke Wilson was recently named one of the top 40 Hollywood golfers by Golf Digest so he teamed up with Swedish sports star Johan Edfors to create a line of golf products for PUMA. The special edition products feature chrome details, higher-end merino wools and personal color combinations that have accents of vibrant green and pink. The line will launch in April and July and will be complemented by a women's golf line. One of the products that they are particularly excited about is the C-hopper shoe that you can wear on or off the course by removing the spikes.
